The City of Birmingham honored U. W. Clemon with its “Putting People
First” during the ceremony at the Birmingham Museum of Art on
October 25, 2024. He was Alabama’s first Black federal judge and a
former state senator. The AWAKEN ceremony began with a panel about
voter access and civic engagement with U.W. Clemon, U.S. Rep. Terri
Sewell, Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin, & Ja’Nise Gentry, the
Alabama Director for Woke Vote. CBS 42 news anchor Sherri Jackson
moderated the conversation. Congratulations, Ja’Nise, on being a part
of this prestigious occasion. Gentry is a former Center Point High School
ambassador and a current Center Point Area Chamber of Commerce
diplomat.
